Core 1: Administrative Core

ADMINISTRATIVE CORE – PROJECT SUMMARY In mammalian cells, DNA is responsible for storing and transferring genetic information, while RNA directly codes for amino acids and acts as a messenger between DNA and ribosomes to make proteins. Sequencing of the human DNA genome has led to increased understanding of the genetic basis of disease and many exciting medical discoveries, but it also revealed knowledge gaps in the molecular and genetic basis of some diseases. Current research indicates that dysregulation of RNA expression is likely involved in human health and disease states, but it has been less studied than human genome. The Brown University COBRE Center for RNA Biology in Health and Disease (CRBHD) aims to serve as a statewide and regional hub for studying the molecular and physiological details of RNA using cutting-edge approaches and seeking to translate those discoveries for human health. Five early-stage investigators will lead research studies on gene expression networks that impact health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, fertility, and embryonic development. Some of these studies are focused on novel therapeutic treatments or preventative medicines like vaccines. The Administrative Core of this Center will provide strong support for these exciting projects and Center resources that support these studies and a nurturing and collaborative research infrastructure that synergizes collaborative projects on human health and disease across Rhode Island.
