Understanding and Targeting the Pathophysiology of Youth-onset Type2 Diabetes

The DISCOVERY study aims to extensively phenotype a large, diverse cohort of youth at risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) as they transition through puberty, a critical window for the development of metabolic dysfunction. Through comprehensive biochemical, clinical, and psychosocial assessments, the study will track longitudinal changes in glycemia, insulin sensitivity, β-cell function, and behavioral and social determinants of health. By characterizing the pathophysiological trajectory of youth-onset T2D, DISCOVERY will help identify early indicators of disease progression and stratify youth according to risk. A robust biobank linked to rich phenotypic data will support in-depth analyses to inform the design of future precision prevention and intervention strategies. Input from local and central stakeholders will help guide study implementation and dissemination of findings.
