Abstract

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Libraries will support the Network of the National Library of Medicine’s (NNLM) mission of advancing the progress of medicine and improving public health by providing all U.S. health professionals with access to biomedical information and helping the public make informed decisions about their health. Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the MUSC Libraries serve as the Regional Medical Library (RML) for Region 2, which includes the Southeastern states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee, as well as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Member organizations across the region are located in rural, urban, coastal, and suburban communities, each with varying needs related to accessing health information, essential services, and reliable infrastructure. RML staff implement a multi-pronged approach to build and sustain productive working relationships with members across the region, using a range of communication and engagement strategies to support meaningful participation in NNLM and NLM initiatives. The RML provides members with multiple pathways for engagement, including training, funding, and service opportunities designed to support local information and workforce needs. The RML also utilizes data and tools from organizations such as the National Area Health Education Center (AHEC), Broadband Now, CDC, HRSA, the National Rural Health Association, and other entities to inform its outreach and strengthen member support. These resources help increase regional capacity to meet information access needs and expand health-related services and education. MUSC Libraries request $4,875,000 (plus indirect costs) over five years (2021–2026) to execute this program and ensure equitable participation and support for all Region 2 members.
