RESEARCH EDUCATION COMPONENT - REC: PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT The Research Education Component (REC) aims to expand the rich training enviroment at Johns Hopkins Univeristy (JHU) by providing additional training opportunities for talented young investigators working in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). The goals of the REC are to: (1) select REC Scholars at the Research Associate and Junior Faculty level, who will be provided with financial support, mentorship and didactic training, with the goal of enabling them to become independent investigators working in ADRD; (2) provide mentorship in ADRD research to young individuals at multiple early educational levels (including the high school, undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students), through several ongoing training programs aimed at individuals from underrepresented groups (URGs); (3) provide didactic training to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at JHU in ADRD research, in the form of a semester-long course entitled ‘Circuits and Brain Disorders’, particularly aimed at attracting talented young diverse researchers to ADRD research, who have not previously been working in the field; and (4) organize seminars and conferences that provide an opportunity for researchers at all levels of accomplishment at JHU, and other local institutions, exposure to important findings and innovations in the field. Through these efforts, the REC strives to strengthen training opportunities at the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center so that they reach a broad, diverse cadre of young researchers, and continue to support the wealth of educational programs that have served to integrate research and training in ADRD throughout the institution.
