Abstract

CURED C-REP Summary/Abstract The Collaborative Cancer Research Education Program (C-REP) of the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM)/ Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center (DLDCCC) and Texas Southern University (TSU) P20 Collaborative Union for Cancer Research and Educational Development (CURED) project will train 20 TSU students (annually) in cancer research, cutting edge technologies, and career pathways. The cohort of 20 CURED scholars will participate in an 8-weeks mentored cancer research experience that integrates BCM and TSU infrastructures every summer followed by year-long culturally congruent outreach education activities that will increase awareness, knowledge, and understanding of research, concepts, processes, and careers in cancer research/cancer health outcomes. The goal of our proposed CURED C-REP is to promote novel and effective venues to attract TSU students into biomedical research and career pathways, specifically in cancer, and to promote comprehensive outreach education focused on cancer research and community engagement that will benefit the students, faculty, and staff at both comprehensive cancer centers and TSU as well as the community. We are certain that the proposed CURED C-REP will enhance cancer research education capacity at TSU, enhance workforce development, improve BCM/DLDCCC’s effectiveness of developing and sustaining research programs focused on cancer health outcomes while increasing the number of investigators conducting cancer research.
