Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY (Animal Modeling Core) The Animal Modeling Core (AMC) of the University of Michigan Skin Biology and Diseases Resource-based Center (UM-SBDRC) is a vital shared resource dedicated to the design, development, and characterization of mouse models to deepen our understanding of skin biology and disease. The AMC supports the overall mission of the UM-SBDRC and aligns with the NIAMS objective to facilitate impactful, translational research. Genetically-engineered mouse models (GEMMs) serve as indispensable tools for testing hypotheses generated by genomic and gene editing studies conducted in vitro or through the Functional Analytics Core (FAC). These in vivo models provide physiologically relevant insights into complex biological systems and disease mechanisms. Although many GEMMs are available through commercial vendors or repositories, project-specific models are frequently required. Unfortunately, many researchers face barriers due to the substantial time, cost, and expertise needed to develop and validate such models. Commercial services are often expensive and suboptimal. The AMC addresses these challenges by offering integrated, comprehensive GEMM development services and in vivo research support. Its continued long-term goal is to eliminate barriers for Center members and facilitate robust preclinical studies. During the current funding period, AMC-supported work has led to high-impact publications, new collaborations, and grant awards. Recognizing the unique contributions of in vivo studies—especially those involving multiple cell types within an intact organism—the AMC plays a critical role in advancing skin biology research from the bench to the clinic.
