Cancer Prevention and Control

The overall goals of the CPC Program are to decrease 1) the incidence of cancer and 2) the impact of cancer diagnoses and treatments on the lives of survivors and their families. Underpinning these goals, the Program works to eliminate inequities contributing to the cancer burden in our catchment area, which spans the entire state of Indiana, and beyond. Of specific concern are lung, colorectal, pancreatic, and breast cancers due to their higher mortality rates in Indiana compared to the national averages and the higher burden observed in certain population groups within Indiana. CPC leaders and investigators are committed to: 1) fostering an environment that enhances a highly interactive and translational research program that collaborates with other IUSCCC programs and with outside institutions and organizations in partnership with Community Outreach and Engagement; 2) educating and training current and future investigators through lifelong learning, interdisciplinary training programs with Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination, and mentoring to grow their research careers; 3) conducting research in our catchment area that directly addresses the needs of those at risk or diagnosed with cancer and their families; and 4) translating our research to inform high-quality, data-driven, patient-centered care. With this, the CPC Program focuses its work on two themes: 1) Risk Reduction and Early Detection, and 2) Survivorship and Symptom Science. Within each theme, CPC investigators address two similar, but distinct, aims related to the identification of risk factors and the development and testing of interventions.
