Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY The Cellular and Molecular Metabolism Core (CMMC) integrates both mouse phenotyping and mechanistic studies to study obesity and nutrition. We address an unmet need for state-of-the-art, cost- effective mouse metabolic phenotyping. Our core uses broad approaches for the Houston Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (H-NORC) user base: (a) in vivo characterization of mouse models using standardized protocols; (b) tools for state-of-the-art analysis of intermediary metabolites and metabolic flux in human and rodent biospecimens, and in cultured cells; and (c) development of new CMMC services in response to the evolving research needs of H-NORC investigators. The CMMC provides a combination of services that include static, dynamic, and continuous monitoring of metabolic parameters, coupled with individualized consultation and interpretation by the expert CMMC core personnel. The CMMC is directed by Dr. Sean Hartig, who offers extensive experience in genetic mouse models for the study of metabolism. Dr. Hartig and the core leadership team oversee CMMC activity to ensure high quality, rigorous results for H-NORC users. Our CMMC coordinates its services with other H-NORC cores to continually evolve and offer the latest advances in metabolic phenotyping of obesity and nutrition. RELEVANCE: The CMMC enables H-NORC investigators to understand how nutrition and obesity influence metabolism using state-of-the-art assays and measurements.
