CCSG Supplement: Early Career Cancer Clinical Investigator Award (ECIA)

Dr. Jonathan Sham is an early-career academic hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgical oncologist with a focus on improving outcomes in patients with surgical diseases of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tree. He is heavily involved in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC) and NCI clinical trial infrastructure at the local and national levels. He is the recipient of SWOG-related clinical trial training and career development awards and is the national study chair for S2408: A Randomized Phase Multicenter Trial of Lanreotide for the Prevention of Postoperative Pancreatic Fistula. Dr. Sham aims to build upon this foundation to further enhance his skills and involvement in cancer center and national clinical trials activities. Through the support of the ECIA, he intends to lead S2408, advance the work of the SWOG GI, Palliative Care, and Surgery committees, and develop the ECOG-ACRIN/SWOG/Alliance Joint Surgery Initiative intended to improve coordination, study accrual efforts, and strategy across the cooperative groups. Locally, he will join the FHCC Scientific Review Committee and Patient Needs and Outcomes Committee with the mandate to advance a new clinical trials navigation program aimed at improving recruitment and retention of all populations in all FHCC clinical trials. He will also expand the NCTN/NCORP portfolio at FHCC to include other trials, with a particular focus on those involving multidisciplinary GI cancer care (e.g. EA2222, A022101). The ECIA will also enable Dr. Sham to pursue additional clinical trials training through his formal SWOG mentorship team and coursework through the American College of Surgeons Designing and Running Cancer Clinical Trials course. Dr. Sham is uniquely positioned to fulfill the intent of the P30 supplement and advance the mission of the NCI through the ECIA program.
