Abstract

Recent technological advances have transformed nonhuman primate (NHP) systems neuroscience, from high-density electrophysiology to viral-vector-based manipulations. This workshop will bring together ~65 early-career researchers to collectively identify and articulate ten key questions that will shape the field's trajectory over the next decade. Drawing inspiration from Hilbert's "Unsolved Problems in Mathematics," which galvanized 20th-century mathematics research, we aim to catalyze similar focused collaborative efforts in NHP systems neuroscience. Five established mid-career scientists will serve as panelists, guiding discussions and providing mentorship. The workshop's innovative format emphasizes co-creation of research directions rather than presentation of completed work, fostering a collaborative community among the next generation of NHP researchers. Our organizing committee spans four countries across Asia, Europe, and North America, ensuring global perspectives. To foster a broadly representative and collaborative community, we will prioritize attendance by non-tenured faculty and senior postdocs, with travel support available to facilitate participation from a wide variety of geographic locations and institutions. The workshop will culminate in a perspective paper outlining the identified questions and proposed approaches. Additionally, sessions on career development, resource sharing, and ethical animal research practices will address the unique challenges of establishing and maintaining successful NHP research programs.
