Novel, low corrosion, bio-compatible disinfectant with biofilm and residual efficacy

PROJECT SUMMARY In the US, about 1.7 million Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAls) occur in hospitals each year, resulting in 99,000 deaths and an estimated $35 billion in healthcare costs. According to previous reports, as much as one third of HAI cases can be attributed to environmental surfaces. Biofilms are an active topic and have been identified as contributing to as much as 70% of infections. Hospital drains, and the biofilms they house are also an important concern. Clostridium difficile is also an ongoing concern, but the most recent pathogen of concern is Candida auris which can contaminate surfaces surrounding colonized patients in as little as 4 hours after disinfection and rebound quickly from disinfectant use, again in as little as 4 hours. Halomine dba AvantGuard has developed a novel chloramine-based disinfectant modeling our immune system’s use of taurine chloramine to kill pathogens. Our compound, developed during our Phase II, is a polymer which is a combination of an N-halamine containing monomer, called Avantamine, and other monomers that improve solubility. We have demonstrated Avantamine is similar in efficacy to other chlorinated disinfectants, can make biofilm efficacy claims using EPA protocols against bacteria and C. auris, can pass EPA residual disinfectant testing at concentrations that show no skin irritation and no corrosion of metals and plastics. Avantamine also should not generate resistance. This Phase IIB project will finish development by finishing efficacy evaluation and testing, optimizing the product and formulating with additives as necessary, finalizing the product package and obtaining third party data on chemical characterization, toxicology and efficacy.
